HAL & GINGER WILLIS.
Their remarkable accomplishments
in country music prompted me to produce and publish a feature
story (Nov/95 CMN) chronicling their career. It was a story
that, until that time, had never been fully documented, and their
accomplishments not properly recognized by their peers and by
country music fans.
As a songwriting team, HAL &
GINGER WILLIS have had their compositions recorded by the all-time
greats of country music ... Patsy Cline, Jim Reeves, Ernest Tubb,
Bobby Helms, Flatt & Scruggs, The Wilburn Brothers, etc.
No other songwriter(s) can claim to have their work covered by
such an array of immortal stars.
As a recording artist and
performer, HAL WILLIS also has impressive credits, including an
international million-selling hit record with his classic
"The Lumberjack" (a #5 hit on Billboard Country Charts
in 1964); touring with Elvis Presley, and being among the first
Canadian-born country artist to perform on the stage of The
Grand Ole Opry at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville (in fact, Hal
Willis was preceded only by Canadian legend Hank Snow, and Ginger
was the first Canadian-born female artist to perform on The Grand
Ole Opry).
What makes
the HAL & GINGER WILLIS story so unique is that the couple
remain active today with their songwriting; and HAL WILLIS has
recently re-activated his recording career with some very
substantial success in the USA, Canada and in Europe. A new
"country" CD and a "Christmas" album have
helped put HAL WILLIS back in the spotlight.
While
all of this marvelous musical achievement stands on its own, the
HAL WILLIS "story" is made even more meaningful by the
man himself. Hal remains unaffected by his years of stardom
... still a down-to-earth, personable and always cheerful
gentleman. Everyone should have a friend like HAL WILLIS!!
