Late To Early

When I left my hometown back in Early, Iowa,
I told my childhood sweetheart that I'd return someday.
I had the hungries to roam before I settled down,
So I hopped a freight train south that was Memphis bound.

Well, I got me a job in a honky tonk down town
Serving beer and wine to the crowd that hung around;
And, for my new found friends, I went and played a losing game.
Now, for me, a week, a month, a year, it's all the same.

Chorus:
Cause it's too late to go to Early,
And in this cell block I must stay.
They sentenced me to sixty years,
And I just got here today.
Yes, it's too late to go to Early,
Because I threw my life away;
And I'll never again see my sweetheart
Back in Early, Iowa.

Well, I never found my riches;  I just found regrets;
For the awful thing that I've done is too hard to forget.
If I'd known then what I know now, I would've stayed back home
And forgot the awful urge that I had to roam.

(Chorus)
